Website design

Deals primarily with the "look and feel" of a website - the color scheme, graphics that enhance the user experience, animations, and the layout of content.

Website development

Involves the all aspects of the website. Website development includes website design, the interaction of the pages, and the backend mechanisms to support the user experience. A prime example is a small program (CGI script) to handle forms, like guestbooks and customer inquiries.

Website hosting

Simplistically speaking a website is simply a collection of computer code and graphic files (images, photos, logos, etc.). There needs to be a means to deliver the content (code and graphics) to the web browser that a user is using to view websites. A device called a server receives requests over the Internet from a user's browser. In response to that request, the server sends out the code and graphics. The user's browser interprets the code and displays the graphics and text according to the layout instructions in the code. This server is considered to host the website.

Search engine optimization

The method is constructing a website such that it is well designed for search engines to determine the content and categorization of the website. Using carefully select keywords hidden int the code and throughout a webpage's content, web developers optimize a website for as best placement in a search engine search results.
